Ogle County Sheriff’s Office  begins Fourth of July safety campaign to encourage safe and sober driving

The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office announced plans for stepped-up July Fourth traffic enforcement with a focus on impaired and unbuckled drivers. The safety campaign will run from June 16 through the early-morning hours of July 5 to encompass three summer weekends leading up to and after Independence Day.

“It’s simple: If you’re driving, don’t drink or use marijuana or other drugs,” said Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle. “Our officers will be working around the clock to keep impaired drivers off the road and enforce all other traffic laws.”

The Sheriff’s Office  will join the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local police and sheriff’s departments for the increased statewide enforcement effort.

Use these tips to help ensure a happy and safe holiday:

  • Designate a sober driver and give them your keys before you go out.
  • Don’t let friends or family members drive under the influence.
  • If you are drunk or impaired by marijuana or other drugs, call a taxi, take mass transit, use your favorite ride-sharing app, or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.
  • Promptly report drunk drivers to law enforcement by pulling over and dialing 911.
  • Make sure everyone in your vehicle wears their seat belt. It’s not only the law, but also your best defense against an impaired driver.
The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High Get a DUI” and “Click It or Ticket” programs are made possible by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The enforcement period runs concurrently with IDOT’s media campaign, reminding motorists that “It’s Not a Game” to drive impaired.

Ogle County Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists to ‘Click It or Ticket’

The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office announced today that it is stepping up enforcement for the Memorial Day “Click It or Ticket” campaign May 13 – 31 and reminds motorists to buckle up. “Click It or Ticket” focuses on safety education and law enforcement support to save lives.

“Seat belts have proven to be one of the best ways to save your life in a crash,” said Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle. “Unfortunately, many still don’t buckle up. Worse yet, not wearing a seat belt is a habit that can be passed on to younger generations who follow the example set by their elders.”

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, a popular time for traveling to visit family and friends. Whether you are traveling down the block or across the country, make sure you buckle up every time. Wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45%. Seat belts save lives every day, but they are only effective if they are used.

While Illinois currently has a 93.5% seat belt use compliance rate, unbelted occupants still account for more than half of those killed in motor vehicle crashes. The simple click of a seat belt could save thousands of lives each year.

The “Click It or Ticket” campaign is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal highway safety funds.

This St. Patrick’s Day, A Designated Driver Is Your Lucky Charm

As we head into St. Patrick’s Day weekend, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office is reminding motorists that they will be out in full force to keep our roads safe while the green beer flows.

“This St. Patrick’s Day, make your own luck by designating a sober driver,” said Sheriff Brian VanVickle. “If you’ll be drinking, using cannabis or partaking of any other impairing substance, planning ahead is the best way to ensure you and your friends make it home safely.”

In addition to looking for alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office will be stepping up seat-belt enforcement, particularly at night when seat-belt usage rates are lowest. Speeding, distracted driving and other traffic laws will also be strictly enforced.

The campaign runs March 11-18.

While designating a sober driver is the simplest way to avoid a tragic crash or DUI arrest, here are some additional tips to help you keep yourself and others safe:

  • If a friend is about to drive impaired, take their keys and help them get home safely.
  • Buckle up. It’s your best defense in the event of a crash.
  • Remember, pedestrians are at risk, too. If you’re walking, keep an eye out for cars. If you’re driving, remain alert for impaired walkers who may not obey street signs.

The St. Patrick’s Day enforcement effort is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
