This Labor Day, remember: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

As Labor Day and the unofficial end of summer near, The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with law enforcement throughout the state to stop impaired driving and help save lives.

“While celebrations marking the last days of summer will look different this year from how they looked last year, there is certainly potential for an increase in the number of impaired drivers on the roads,” said Sheriff Brian VanVickle. “Impaired driving kills more than 10,000 people in the United States each year. Please plan ahead for a safe ride home before you leave the house. It truly is a matter of life or death.”

The high-visibility “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign runs from Aug. 20 through the early-morning hours of Sept. 8. During this period, motorists in Ogle County can expect to see stepped-up impaired driving patrols and seat-belt enforcement, particularly at night when seat-belt usage rates are at their lowest. Speeders and distracted drivers should also be aware.

If you’re celebrating this Labor Day, remember to designate a sober driver and don’t let friends or family members drive drunk. Even a small amount of alcohol can impair judgment and reaction times, making driving unsafe.

Ogle County Sheriff’s Office Kicks Off Independence Day Campaign For Safe And Sober Driving

The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office announced its plans for July Fourth traffic enforcement with a focus on impaired and unbuckled drivers. The safety campaign will run June 17 through July 6 to encompass three weekends leading up to and following the Independence Day holiday, one of the deadliest times on Illinois roads.

“We want all our residents and visitors to have an enjoyable and safe holiday,” said Sheriff Brian VanVickle. “Remember – if you’re going to drink or use other impairing substances, don’t drive. We will be stepping up patrols to keep impaired drivers off the roads and ensure everyone makes it home from their celebrations.”

The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office will join the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local police and sheriff’s departments for the increased statewide enforcement effort.

To keep your 4th of July celebrations safe, plan ahead by designating a sober driver, not driving distracted and always wearing your seat belt. Other important tips include:

  • Give your designated driver your keys before you go out.
  • If you are drunk or impaired by marijuana or other drugs, call a taxi, take mass transit, or call a family member to get you home safely.
  • Use your favorite ride-share service such as Uber or Lyft or use public transportation.
  • If you see a drunk driver, pull over safely and call 911.
  • Make sure everyone in your vehicle wears their seat belt. It is the best defense against an impaired driver.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.  This Memorial Day, ‘Click It or Ticket’

Starting now through Memorial Day weekend, the Ogle County Sheriff's Office is stepping up enforcement to remind motorists to “Click It or Ticket.”

“We want the act of buckling up to become automatic to all drivers and passengers,” said Sheriff Brian VanVickle. “’Click It or Ticket’ isn’t about citations – it’s about saving lives. Wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45%. Seat belts save lives every day, but they’re only effective if they’re used.”

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, a popular time for traveling to visit family and friends. Whether you are traveling down the block or across the country, make sure you buckle up every time.

While Illinois currently has a 94.6% seat belt use compliance rate, unbelted occupants still account for more than half of those killed in motor vehicle crashes. The simple click of a seat belt could save thousands of lives each year.
